10 Celebrities Who Are Making a World of Difference

Some of the superhero celebs that are changing the face of our planet are both men and women, young and old. Many have become passionate and have started their own environmentally conscientious organizations or are supporting other organizations in a big way. There are at least 50 different celebs that are intimately involved with environmental issues. I am only going to name a few here to give you an idea of the magnitude of this movement.

One of the most well known actors in Hollywood, Leonardo DiCaprio is a huge environmentalist. In 1998 he started the DiCaprio Foundation because he is passionate about protecting our planet. LDF’s grant making program encompasses six focus areas: Wild land conservation, climate change, indigenous rights, marine conservation, innovative solutions and public advocacy. He founded it in 1998, supports 65+ organizations and has $59.6 million in grants awarded. A new film is out that he made, ‘Before The Flood,’ airing on the National Geographic channel. The film explores how our climate is warming up and disrupting our natural environment.

Brad Pitt started the “Make It Right” Foundation to raise funds for 150 environmentally friendly, newly built homes for victims of 2005 hurricane Katrina. He donated his time, energy and $5 million to the project. Stars helped like Kanye West, Rhianna, Snoop Dog and Sheryl Crow. They in turn helped him complete the project. Pitt also donated $2 million to the African Wildlife Sanctuary.

Harrison Ford for the past 30 years has been directly involved with Conservation International. CI has helped support 1,200 protected areas in 77 countries by safeguarding 601 million hectares of land, marine and coastal areas. Harrison Ford said, “We all know our planet is at a critical juncture: and humanity needs a healthy planet to survive.”

Robert Redford has been involved in serving our planet for many years. He is the founder of Sundance Preserve, with the late Paul Newman. The Sundance Preserve protects the ecosystem of the North Fork Canyon in Utah. Redford also founded The Redford Center with his children to address environmental issues through the power of story in film.

Gisele Bundchen, Brazilian-born super model, is a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Program. The UNCEP helps raise awareness and inspire action to protect the environment. She is working on climate change and environmental degradation. She is taking action on a global scale to secure a healthy future for the next generation.

George Clooney founded “Not On our Watch,” addressing root causes to help bring an end to complex conflicts in regions of the world that sometimes the international community ignores.

Salma Hayek, an environmental activist, supports Global Green USA, helping the Inuit food supply that is dwindling due to global warming crisis in the arctic. She starred in a movie about global warming with Jake Gyllenhaal, The Day After Tomorrow. She supports BP Solar Neighbors Program, which tries to get solar photovoltaic panels into poor homes in Los Angeles. Hayek is also a member of Save the Earth, providing cleaner drinking water for those in need.

Justin Timberlake built the first ever eco-friendly golf course. Golf courses use and leach major pesticides into the air and waterways each year and he believed that it was time to build one that was bird and people friendly. His golf course is in Millington, Tennessee, called Mirimichi. Timberlake was also honored with the Environmental Media Association’s Futures Award for being an environmental leader in the world.

Daryl Hannah founded Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance in 2006, along with Kelly King and Annie Nelson. The Alliance supports and encourages sustainable production and use of the renewable fuel biodiesel. The primary mission of the Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance is the completion of an independent sustainability certification system for U.S. Biodiesel Feedstock, Production, Distribution and end use fuel. Hannah is also an animal advocate; she believes that all issues are interconnected. She sits on several environmental advocacy boards such as the Environmental Media Association (EMA), Sylvia Earle Alliance, Mission Blue and the Action Sports Environmental Coalition.

Natalie Portman is a dedicated animal rights activist and environmentalist. She filmed a documentary about endangered gorillas in Rwanda. She designed vegan shoes and was a member of environmental song and dance troupe, The World Patrol Kids. Portman is also the ‘face’ of a low energy light bulb company.
